There are four generations of the Toyota 3SGTE/3SGE, which were used in the Toyota Celica, MR2, Caldina and Altezza. All 3SGTE engines had a displacement of 2.0 L, with the 3SGTE being the performance factory turbo designation. The second generation, found in the US market MR2 turbo was produced from 1990 to 1995 and in the overseas markets from 1990-1993, receiving a slight boost in horsepower and torque. It also proved to be a slightly more reliable engine than the first generation engine. The second generation non turbo also did-away with the T-VIS system, which was replaced by the ACIS (Acoustic Control Induction System), proving to be much more efficient. T-VIS was, however, retained on the second-generation 3SGTE. The third generation 3SGTE was produced from 1994 to 1999 in the Celica and MR2 outside of the US. Power output was increased over the Gen 2, while torque figures stayed the same. It received a minor revision in 1996 for emissions (EGR) which reduced power output. These cams do not fit the BEAMS 3SGE 4th generation engine ("Black Top") which began production in 1997 and is equipped with VVT-i. BEAMS is an acronym which stands for Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System.
