The definitive guide to wiring up a Gen. III in your Mk.II

Hi everyone.

I'm thinking about getting a Gen. III clip to put in a 91T I just acquired that has a blown engine.

Has anyone made a guide on which wire on the Gen. 3 connects to which wire on the US spec.? The plugs are different, yes?

I haven't really had a chance to sit down and look at the wiring in the car but I think there is one plug by the ECU in the trunk, and two more in the rear fusebox in the engine compartment. Are any of them the same as the Gen. 3?

Does anyone have the wiring diagrams of both US and Gen. 3 so I can figure it out for myself?

If there is cutting and splicing needed, where do most of you do it?

For those of you who were smart enough to let someone else do the swap, who did it for you?

Thanks,

Alan

Perhaps we can make this a sticky in the hopes it will boost sales for our JDM importer friends and help drive down the costs of clips due to people seeing how easy it is to swap in a Gen. 3!

wiring

It all depends on where your harness was cut. mine was cut at the fuse box located in the engine compartment. So I just used my usdm wiring that comes from the front of the car and spliced it into the fuse box in the engine compartment. All the color codes match. Since my wires were cut I didnot have the right cowl plug located in the engine compartment. Therefore I had to splice about 8-10 wires( not sure because it was done so long ago.) There are two important wires that you have to worry about. I believe they are the blue_black. There are two of them, one is for the Fuel Pump Relay and the other one ( Damn my memory sucks) If I get a chance I will let you know the color codes. I ran into a problem with my tranny so I had to take the whole motor out again. Once I drop the engine back in and put together the wiring I will let you know exactly what I did.

Tec,

Thanks for the reply. I hope to make a web page in the future with a DIY section for putting in a Gen. 3 with lots of pics and diagrams. If you could get me some pictures later on that would be cool. I tend to get in there and forget about taking pictures while I'm working. I also spoke to Edwin @ Nieshlin Motors / Cartune Motorsports ( http://www.neishlinmotors.com/ or http://www.cartunemotorsports.com/ ) about a clip, and at the same time I mentioned this thread. I hope he can come in and contribute to this.

Unfortunately. The supply of Gen. 3 clips looks pretty low, and following the law of supply and demand the price seems to be going up on these due to everyone trying to get one. Come on Japan! Start racking up the miles! We need more clips!

Thanks,

Alan

Gen3 clips

Karolinakid-

My E153 LSD tranny rebuild is almost complete. It'
s costing me 1300 dollars. That was an expensive stupid mistake. Anyway I am sorry to hear that gen3's are in big demand right now. How much are they going for now? I currently have 2 mr2's both with a gen3 swap. One is a 91t w/ gen3 and the other is a 91 na hardtop w/gen3. I will definately post some pics up of my engine swap.

Regards, Tec

Tec,

I've found that most Gen. 3 clips cost around 3-4k depending on mileage, and if they come with taillights and trunk lid. Don't forget to add in shipping on top of that.

Which car did you do the swap into first? You had a cut harness the first time around, did you get a complete harness for the second one?

gen3 swap

KarolinaKid

I Performed with 91T>Gen3 hybrid first. The wires came cut and all. I had to splice about 20 wires. 10 wires in the fuse box licated in the engine bay and about 8-10 wires in the trunk compartment. I also had to switch some pins around on the ECU connectors.

The second swap I am performing is in progress. The NA is completely stripped and I am going to raise the engine in that within this week. I will try to take some pics of the wiring. The wiring is complete all the way to the front headlights and rear taillights, dashboard etc... I have never seen a more complete harness than this one.

I wish i had documented what wires i spliced. now i have no recolection. i did all the splicing right where the harness was cut, behind the drivers seat. it would be cool if someone came up with a diagram to show how to do it, it definalty is a pain when all u have is the wiring diagram for the u.s. model.

Hi all,

I got a clip! 94 GT model with only 27k miles! I currently have my engine in and running. I was lucky enough to get a clip with the complete harness for the whole car. Unfortunately Japan is RHD and the under dash wiring follows suit.

I just used the harness that runs along the drivers side(US) from the kick panel to the rear.

Follow along on my journey into the abyss known as Wire Loom Hades!

Kickpanel:

Good News:
All the plugs in the kickpanel plug right in with the exception of the one single 10ga. Blk/Red wire that supplies power to the fan relay etc. in the rear fusebox. Just cut and splice on the connector from the US harness. Use solder! Not just a crimp connector!

Bad News:
The Cruise and airbag wires are all mixed up in this area so I have to figure these out yet (If the wires are even there).

T-Top storage area:

Good News:
The fuel pump connector in the T-Top storage area was the same. pluged right in. There are some extra wires here on the J-spec harness, I'm not sure what they are for yet.

Bad News:
No wiring for the rear speaker on the drivers side or for the door light switch in the J-spec harness. Had to run wiring up to the kick panel for the light and cut and splice into the wiring loom coming up from the amp for the speaker. For some wierd reason, on the US spec, it goes from the radio to the amp, from the amp to the drivers kick panel (through the loom in the center of the car), back through the harness on the drivers sill up to the speaker. Talk about convoluted!

Engine compartment:

Good News:

I don't believe there are any problems in the engine compartment. Unless you have the mechanical speedo. Then you need to remove the 93-up connector and replace it with the 91-92 connector for the electrical sender on the tranny.

Bad News:

Didn't you see above? :P

Trunk:

Good News:

Most everything plugs up here, fan computer, starter relay, trunk light, plate lights, antenna.

Bad News:

My 91 tail lights didn't plug right in. Instead of 1 male connector to 1 female connector. I had 2 of the same trying to go together. I sure am glad I pushed the guy to get the 94 tails with the clip. But, can you really call this bad news? I mean, I have 94 tails now! The hard part was taking a hammer to my car to fit the backup lights. I did have to rekey the lock cylinder but that took like 30 mins tops.

Well, that is but a little bit of what I had to do. I still have more to do and will add as I go. For now my car drives, and it's hella fast. A new Eclipse ate my dust today, but they're dog slow anyway, my US spec car beats those.

Because of the different models and trim levels of the cars you may end up with different wiring. My clip was a GT model but had no ABS or amps or subs in the rear while my 91 does.

Soooooooo....

Don't blame me if what I did won't work for you and burns up your car.

Love, peace, and a ball of hair grease!

Alan

Oh, while I'm here.....

Has anyone defeated their speed limiter, sucks hitting 120-125 and feeling that bog then pick up and bog again.

I was thinking of cutting the signal wire to the ECU from the speed sensor but I don't know if the ECU relies on the signal for anything else besides the limiter.

i believe at least one side effect is that if you have p/s itll get overboosted since itll think you are going quite a bit slower then you really are

Cool Wiring diagram

It would be really cool if people can post the wiring diagram or custom make some harness for 3rd into usdm. Is 91 much harder to do than 93(usdm) for 3rd gen swap if the harness is cut near the fuse box that goes into the interior?
